Russian Federation to list U.S. media as 'foreign agents'

The US demand that Russia's RT TV channel registers as a foreign agent, as well as the withdrawal of its Congress credentials, is a sign of Washington's weakness, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a meeting of the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) Committee for Control and Regulations on Monday.

The statement comes after a USA association of journalists who report on Congress voted to revoke the press credentials of the Kremlin-funded RT news channel.

"We shall discuss the issue of Russia's mirror-like response to discrimination of Russian media in the United States, including the possibility of a ban for accreditation of U.S. media which will be declared foreign agents by the Russian Justice Ministry, in the Federation Council and the State Duma, at the commission's session on December 13", a senior Russian lawmaker declared.

The Kremlin has retaliated following a U.S. decision to signal out the Russian-owned network RT America with regulatory amendments targeting several key media outlets.

Other media outlets include congressionally-funded Cold War-era outlets that partly broadcast in Russian, as well as seven outlets controlled by them that mostly focus on specific regions like Crimea and the North Caucasus, the report said.

Klimov also restated Moscow's position that this was a "mirrored response" to the steps taken by the US Justice Department. "Our measures were completely reciprocal in response to the oppression of the Russian media in the U.S., and if nothing new happens from that [US] side, we have no reason to expand this list", Klimov said.

No access to Duma for "foreign agents"? A source quoted by Interfax said that all parliamentary factions were in agreement and the decision could be passed as early as Wednesday.

"I can not pre-indicate the outcome of the vote, but with the atmosphere surrounding the issue, it hard to imagine that the Council would not approve such a measure", said the ruling party lawmaker.
