Amazon launches Prime membership in Singapore to attract customers

Furthermore, items that previously shipped free to Singapore using AmazonGlobal Saver are not available, or are shipped separately but with fees. Amazon are hoping that the lure of halving the threshold for free worldwide shipping from Amazon US to Singapore and cutting delivery times will be enough to convince Singapore customers to cough up.

To encourage sign ups the Singapore Prime membership advertised at $8.99 per month will be reduced to $2.99 for a limited time, although Amazon haven't yet indicated how long the discount will last. The price for the monthly membership is at S$8.99.

According The Straits Times, Singapore is the 16th country and the first in Southeast Asia to enjoy this service.

The free two-hour delivery on orders over SGD40, between 10am and 10pm daily via the Prime Now app, will also apply to Prime members.

Another service available to Singapore's Amazon Prime subscribers is video streaming, which will allow members to stream or download popular movies and TV series via the Amazon Prime Video app on Android and iOS mobile devices.

Membership in the U.S. costs US$10.99 a month or US$99 a year, and provides access to a slew of services such as music streaming, free same-day delivery and even restaurant delivery in certain areas.

The Prime membership will entitle the customers of Singapore to have access to more than five million products listed on Amazon's site in the United States.

However, to succeed in the market, Wang asserted that Amazon needs to play to its strengths because besides its two-hour delivery promise, consumers in Singapore expect Amazon's own products like Echo, Kindle and digital books to be made available to them, have access to more products and brands from the USA, as well as digital content like games and movies. Since 2005, Prime has been focused on making customers' lives better every day.

However, he encouraged "anyone living in Singapore to leverage the Prime membership package developed specifically for Singapore" and noted that Prime membership is country-specific and not transferable, which means that those with US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones.

Amazon's offering, available in Austin, Minneapolis, New York City, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco and its hometown of Seattle, will help it win last-minute craft shoppers and the artisans eager to reach them. Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer, is projected to capture half of the e-commerce holiday spending growth, according to Bain & Co.
