Japan Airlines aims to offer Supersonic Air Travel

Japan Airlines (JAL) is making a strategic investment of $10m in Boom Supersonic and has secured an option to purchase up to 20 Boom aircraft through a pre-order arrangement.

Boom Technology has formalised an until-now secret partnership with JAL, with the carrier putting US$10 million ($14.5m) into the company and ordering 20 of the faster-than-the-speed-of-sound aircraft. Boom had already raised about $41m in funding up to March 2017 from a bevvy of VCs and claimed in June to have a total order bill for 76 aircraft. Their mission: provide an aircraft that can operate flights from NY to London in under 3.5 hours.

According to Boom, a San Francisco to Tokyo flight would take only 5.5 hours, a huge chop off the current flight time of around nine hours. JAL has made a strategic investment of United States dollars 10 million in Boom.

"Through this partnership, we hope to contribute to the future of supersonic travel with the intent of providing more "time" to our valued passengers while emphasizing flight safety", the airline's president, Yoshiharu Ueki said in a statement accompanying Tuesday's announcement.

Enter Boom Supersonic, a start-up-cum-development project that hopes to make supersonic travel all of the above.

The airliner Boom hopes to one day build would cruise at 1,450 miles per hour - 2.2 times the speed of sound - and accommodate 45 to 55 passengers in business class seating.

"We are very proud to be working with Boom on the advancement in the commercial aviation industry".

A flight between Sydney and Los Angeles would take seven hours, which includes the time required for a refuelling stop enroute.

Boom Supersonic is a Denver-based company dedicated to removing the barriers to experiencing the planet, starting by building a Mach-2.2 airliner economical enough to operate with business-class fares. We're thrilled to be working with JAL to develop a reliable, easily-maintained aircraft that will provide revolutionary speed to passengers.

'The Boom airliner will be a core part of the intercontinental airline fleet, ' said Mike Boyd, of manufacturer Boyd Group International.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic has an option for 10 of the aircraft, while Virgin Galactic, the company's space-travel wing, will be involved in the testing process.
