Michael Flynn Vowed to End Russia Sanctions, According to Whistleblower

On Inauguration Day 2017, business associate of former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn touted texts from Flynn promising to gut Russian sanctions that were hindering the nuclear project the associate was pushing, a whistleblower has told House Democrats.

The New York Times was first to report the letter on Wednesday, claiming it represents "the strongest evidence to date that the Trump administration wanted to end the sanctions immediately, and suggests that Mr. Flynn had a possible economic incentive for the United States to forge a closer relationship with Russian Federation".

Flynn also informed the associate that his business partners could move forward with their project, which aimed to construct a network of nuclear reactors across the Mideast with support from Russian and other global interests, the whistleblower said.

On Wednesday Cummings sent the whistleblower's account to committee chairman Trey Gowdy with a request that he issue subpoenas to White House officials, including chief of staff John Kelly, as well as Flynn, Copson and their other business associates for material that would corroborate the whistleblower's statements. "These grave allegations compel a full, credible, and bipartisan congressional investigation".

As the whistleblower chatted with Flynn's associate during an Inauguration Day celebration on January 20, Flynn sent texts saying the associate's nuclear proposal was "good to go", the whistleblower said. He then claimed Flynn had texted him "to tell others involved in the nuclear project to continue developing their plans", which were "going to make a lot of very wealthy people" once the Russian Federation sanctions were "ripped up".

Cummings said the whistleblower, whom he did not identify in the letter, "fears retaliation", but would speak with Gowdy if he agrees to protect the whistleblower's identity. Copson was working at the time with Flynn on a project to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East, and Flynn reported in August that he served as an "advisor" to Copson's company between 2015-2016.

The White House referred inquiries to Trump's personal White House attorney, Ty Cobb, who declined to comment.

The witness told Cummings and committee investigators that Copson shared a text message he had just received from Flynn, who was on stage at the Capitol during Trump's speech.

The whistleblower told Cummings he met with Alex Copson, managing partner of ACU Strategic Partners and a business partner of Flynn's, on the day of Trump's inauguration.

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general and former high-ranking intelligence officer, pleaded guilty last week to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his discussions with the then-Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, about the sanctions that day after they were imposed.

Flynn's attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I do not bring this whistle-blower to your attention lightly", Mr. Cummings said.
