Putin Announces He'll Seek Reelection as Russian President in 2018

Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking a fourth term in office -which would keep him in the Kremlin through 2024, if he wins another six-year term as expected.

Putin served two terms as president from 2000 to 2008 before becoming the country's prime minister.

Addressing the automobile factory workers, Putin said he couldn't find a better place and a better moment to announce his candidacy.

"'I am sure that we will be very successful", Putin, 65, said after confirming his plan to mount a reelection bid.

"Naturally, there could still be some pockets of resistance, but overall the military work at this stage and on this territory is completed with, I repeat, the total rout of the terrorists", he said.

The most visible Putin foe, Alexei Navalny, also wants to run, even though a conviction he calls politically motivated bars him from joining the campaign.

Asked by the announcer whether he would run in the election, which is scheduled for March 18, Putin responded by asking whether the mostly young audience members and others like them would support his candidacy. That tally includes Putin's time as prime minister; another six-year term as president would put him closer to Stalin's almost 30-year reign. REUTERS/Sergei KarpukhinPutin is lauded by allies as a father of the nation figure who has restored national pride and expanded Moscow's global clout with interventions in Syria and Ukraine.

In a move critics suspect is a Kremlin ploy to split the liberal opposition vote while injecting a patina of interest, television celebrity Ksenia Sobchak, the daughter of Putin's political mentor, is standing against him, offering voters unhappy with his rule someone to back.

The secretary of Russia's Central Elections Commission, Maya Grishina, told reporters that according to law, the president does not have to take a leave for the period of the election campaign.

That decision will be closely watched - as whoever holds that post is often seen as the president's heir apparent.
