Ex-Olympic Sports Doctor Gets 60 Years for Child Pornography

Nassar, who worked with USA Gymnastics for almost three decades as a trainer and medical coordinator, could receive a minimum sentence of 27 years, but prosecutors want a 60-year prison term.

Instead, McKayla and her mother Erin Maroney chose to testify in the form of letters, which have been made public, addressed to the federal judge presiding the case, ESPN reports.

"She has transformed from a bubbly, positive, loving, world-class athlete into a young adult who was deeply depressed, at times suicidal". In her letter, she mentioned the first time Nassar abused her.

"This experience has shattered McKayla", Erin Maroney wrote of her daughter, one of over 140 women to accuse Nassar of sexual abuse, in letters obtained by ESPN.

Erin and her husband were told they were not allowed to stay with their daughter at competitions overseas nor on the Karyoli Ranch, the US team's training centre in Huntsville, Texas named after former coaches Bela and Marta Karyoli, where McKayla says Nassar first abused her. She wrote that she and McKayla's father "were not allowed to stay with McKayla" while traveling and "sometimes we were not even in the same hotel".

U.S. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman also filed a complaint. My husband once questioned the propriety of the isolation of the girls during global travel. 'More safe than the President of the U.S., ' he said to him.

"I. learned a few weeks ago from my daughter that at the world championships in Tokyo, [Nassar] drugged her, made her lay nude on a treatment table, straddled her and digitally penetrated her while rubbing his erect penis against her", Erin wrote.

Erin Maroney also detailed one graphic incident. "She said to me, 'Mom I thought I was going to die'".

Maroney's parents are still haunted by the times McKayla was supposed to be under the protection of USA Gymnastics and her coaches, and yet was left unsupervised, giving Nassar easy access to perform his pseudo-treatments on her.

Nassar's possession of child pornography emerged after MSU began investigating him in August 2016 after former gymnast Rachael Denhollander reported to MSU police that he sexually assaulted her in 2000, when she was 15. Women accused Nassar of assaulting them at a campus clinic at Michigan State, at local gyms across the country, at the Karolyi Ranch outside Houston, and at global competitions around the globe, including the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, and the 2012 Summer Games in London. Not once. No one has apologized.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette this week urged Michigan State to release an internal investigation into the university's handling of the allegations.

McKayla's testimony was a bit more measured, but no less pointed. "End of story! He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away".

A MI sports doctor was sentenced Thursday to serve 60 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography. This does not sit well for McKayla Maroney, who does not believe there should be a limit on Nassar's term. He's also pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges in both Ingham and Eaton counties and could be sentenced to up to life in prison in those cases when he's sentenced next month.
