Instagram is testing a standalone messaging app because why not

The Direct messaging system that was upgraded to replicate Snapchat functionality just earlier this year may become a standalone app supposed to offer you a Snapchat like chatting system that won't interfere with the main goal of Instagram. If you install the app Direct, the inbox usually disappears from the Instagram app and can only be availed in the messaging app.

Direct has some 375 million users as of April, which is one good reason for Facebook to want to turn it into a standalone app. Although the fact is that this is its officially test only and not a final run through, Instagram's logistic strategy for constructing the Direct app is that private messaging can never be a best-in-class experience when it lives inside an app meant for public broadcasting. It's fast, visual and super fun.

Direct would be available from today in Italy, China, Turkey, Israel, Portugal and Uruguay for both the Android and iOS.

After starting out as a simple way for sharing photos with friends, family, and random followers, Instagram has grown into a fairly bloated app these days.

It's unclear if Instagram will bring Direct to other countries following its initial testing, but seeing how successful Facebook has been with Messenger after removing direct messaging from its core app, an expansion of Direct to other countries in the coming months wouldn't be all that surprising.

"Camera-first", huh? That sure sounds a lot like Snapchat. And you don't have to send photos; you can also just send your a message through the app. Overall, the Direct app works pretty much like Snapchat, which isn't a surprise since Facebook and Instagram have been copying for some time now. In the same way, you can open or access Direct app from the main Instagram app.

Opening Direct would directly be taking you to the camera to persuade one in making and sharing content. A similar feature is also present in the Instagram app to quickly jump into Direct. Remember, users went on a similar outrage when Facebook introduced a dedicated messaging app for its platform.
