Jeremy Pruitt emerges as favorite for Tennessee HC job

Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt is expected to be the next head coach at Tennessee sources tell SI. Tennessee struck out landing Dan Mullen, former Mississippi State and now Florida head coach, and once that deal fell through, Currie reportedly offered the Tennessee coaching job to Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano last Sunday.

Low said the Volunteers and Pruitt were in the process of finalizing a deal while Hyams revealed that a potential snag in the negotiations is the potential availability of Pruitt coaching in the College Football Playoff. Pruitt is in his second season with the Tide. Low noted Tennessee also interviewed Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. Sports CFB insider Pete Thamel, Pruitt has emerged as the front runner for the job. He also held the same position at Georgia from 2014-15 before moving on to the Crimson Tide.

Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee's former College Football Hall of Fame coach, replaced John Currie on Friday as the Vols' athletic director, and he has spearheaded the coaching search ever since.

This would be at least the second meeting with Pruitt, according to GoVols247.

Alabama has boasted one of the top defenses in the country under Pruitt.

Currie fired former UT head coach Butch Jones 25 days ago, and nothing went right.

As good a defensive coordinator as Pruitt has been, he'll sink or swim as a head coach based on how he fills out the rest of his staff. Dooley coached with Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins. "You see that with the way guys have bought into new roles, and guys have been able to move around and play different spots". Less than a week after having the full-time job, Fulmer appears to have his coach.

Pruitt's hiring would end a wild ride for the Tennessee coaching search.
