Lionel Messi lobbies for Gonzalo Higuain's return to Argentina

Lionel Messi has demanded for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain to be recalled by Super Eagles World Cup rivals Argentina for Russian Federation 2018 because he is "one of the best strikers in the world".

Higuain was a starter for Argentina in the World Cup final against Germany in Brazil 2014 and in the finals of the Copa America in 2015 and 2016.

"They have very good players, it was clear in the second half (in Krasnodar); but they also allow you to play, they leave gaps and many spaces are generated".

"People are waiting for this group to leave because it has not won for a long time and those who criticise get exhausted of always seeing the same faces".

'If we do badly at the World Cup, we all have to disappear from the national team.

"I think it's the last opportunity for this group". What I have are memories.

"I would have to review them to see what we did wrong so we don't repeat them".

Lionel Messi has given his backing to out-of-favour Argentina team mate Gonzalo Higuain and said the Juventus forward should be recalled to the national side in time for next year's World Cup finals.

The Argentine felt that bitterness has led to a certain kind of burden that is not easy to deal with and said: "If Argentina don't do well in this World Cup, we will all have to disappear from the national team". He demonstrates this every weekend at Juventus, but does not play the same with Argentina.

"It hurts a lot to have gone to three finals and be so criticised. But he must be in the squad".

Higuain has scored 11 goals in 21 matches for Juventus this season.
