Sri Lanka complains to ICC on air pollution during Delhi Test

The concentration of the most dominant pollutants, PM2.5 and PM10, reached levels as high as 276 and 455 micrograms per cubic metre (ug/m3) by 3 pm, according to the Central Control Room for Air Quality Management of the CPCB.

The match, which was being played at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, was disrupted multiple times, albeit briefly, on Sunday with India eventually declaring the innings for 536/7. But Pothas said his men were physically sick amid the "extremely high" pollution levels choking the ground.

As a result, Thisara became the seventh player to captain Sri Lanka in 2017, following Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Dinesh Chandimal and Chamara Kapugedera who all have borne the responsibility in one format or the other. "If I allowed them to go, I am setting a precedent here", he added.

Dhawan, born and brought up in Delhi, noted, "This is the time of crop harvesting in some of the states and this month the pollution has been a wee bit more". What we are going to do tomorrow is in the hands of the match referee.

Play is routinely suspended due to poor weather, low visibility, lightning or rain, but a stoppage as a result of pollution is nearly unheard of.

With pollution levels particularly alarming in the past two years, doctors have raised awareness against sports events in Delhi.

The coach said there was pollution everywhere in India and it was the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who had fixed the schedule. "People are now used to bearing the problem". The islanders were booed by Indian fans as their opening batsmen walked to the crease after Kohli's declaration. The Indian team decided against wearing anti-pollution masks when it took the field. Earlier in a dramatic action, Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera ordered all nine players boarding to India last night to disembark the plane as they were leaving the country without his approval. Doctors warn that competitive exercise during severe pollution can trigger asthma attacks, worsen lung conditions and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Authorities in Delhi have in recent years closed power plants temporarily and experimented with taking some cars off the road but the measures have had little effect.
