Palestinian factions stepped up efforts on Thursday to finalise a Hamas handover of the Gaza Strip to President Mahmoud Abbas as protests broke out in the enclave against the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Humanitarian organisation the Palestinian Red Crescent said dozens suffered tear gas inhalation, six more were wounded by rubber bullets and one person from a bullet wound.

Protests broke out in Gaza and the West Bank and Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump made a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The Israeli armed forces denied live ammunition was used. Security sources said no rockets fell in Israeli territory.

"We want the uprising to last and continue to let Trump and the occupation regret this decision".

He added that armed resistance factions in Palestine have received clear orders to be ready to counter this strategic threat, which endangers occupied Jerusalem and its future.

Anxious that the recrimination could disrupt the reconciliation efforts, Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Al-Hamdallah and other Fatah delegates arrived in Gaza on Thursday to meet Hamas.

Trump's move was denounced by prominent political figures from across the world.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said that "it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel".
