Nissan to test their self-driving auto service in Japan 2018

Nissan and DeNA started a technical field test using an autonomous vehicle this year.

Semi-autonomous driving features such as single-lane diving and auto parking are features that have already been incorporated by Nissan in its Japanese models of its Serena minivan, the X-Trail SUV and the new Leaf electric vehicle.

The self-driving taxi service, known as Easy Ride, is said to be the first test to take place in Japan's coastal city of Yokohama, and Nissan will work with DeNA, a technology company that develops healthcare, gaming and vehicle networking services.

The project combines Nissan's Intelligent Mobility technology, which ensures the robot auto navigates roads safely, with DeNA's experience in developing and operating self-driving mobility services using its experience in artificial intelligence and the internet.

At a later stage, robotaxis will be available for use by the general public too.

It comments that one of the more interesting aspects of Nissan's test is that users will be able to not only specify exactly where they want to go, but also use general written queries like "I want to eat pancakes" and have the vehicle automatically choose a relevant destination. The only thing the passenger needs to do is to select a destination.

A multi-lingual version of the app in under development including a system that will monitor riders and the vehicle to ensure utmost safety.

Four years ago, Nissan Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn had ambition to launch Nissian's autopilot vehicle by 2020. Nissan said through such a new rental taxi mode, the city's public transport infrastructure will be greatly expanded, Easy Ride will effectively enhance the interaction between cities.

According to reliable sources, again reported by Sina, participants in this test will sign a contract on Easy Ride's website and estimated tests of self-driving taxi will start in March 2018. "With customers able to discover new local destinations through Easy Ride, the companies expect the service will also help energize cities and neighborhoods".
