"Kupwara police has lodged an FIR in Police Station Kralpora and investigation has been started".

Iqbal was rushed to a hospital at Kralpora and he was later referred to a hospital in Srinagar, but he succumbed on the way, the official said. Meanwhile, police handed over the body of deceased youth to family for last rites after completion of medico-legal formalities.

"Around 2255 hours, an ambush party noticed suspicious movement of three people near a nullah".

"The moment he came out of his home, a volley of fire broke the lull and Bhat collapsed on the ground. The individuals were challenged by troops, however, they did not respond", said the spokesman.




Expressing shock and grief over the killing of sumo driver Asif Iqbal in kupwara, National Conference on Sunday strongly condemning the incident, NC Working President Mr. Omar Abdullah termed the killing of Asif Iqbal of Kupwara as a tragic and inconsolable loss and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

The protests erupted after residents of Batpora village clashed with the security forces.

The protestors were chanting pro-Zakir Musa, pro-freedom and anti-India slogans and sought action against the forces involved in the killing.

Security forces used tear-gas shells to contain the situation in the area, where Internet services remained suspended. "Investigations on the incident are in progress", he added. The cab driver was asked to stop but he didn't and was then shot by them.

A senior police officer was injured in the clashes. Witnesses said thousands of people participated in the funereal prayers.
