Trump Signs Order to Improve Mental Health Resources for Transitioning Veterans

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday aimed at expanding mental-health care for transitioning veterans as they leave the military, in an effort to reduce suicides in a group that is considered particularly at risk. This deadline gives the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs 60 days to develop the new health care plans.

Keleher, a marine working at Veterans of Foreign Wars says leaving the service and joining civilian life is hard for veterans, making mental health crucial.

"They get out of the military and they had nobody to talk to, nobody to speak to".

Trump says, "we will not rest until all of America's great veterans receive the care they have earned".

"Now, when somebody doesn't do the job at the VA, we fire that person", Trump said. It calls for automatic enrollment in mental health care for one year after discharge, regardless of combat experience. The plans could include expanded Veterans Affairs health services for the almost 265,000 service members who transition out of the military each year, extended access to Defense Department resources, greater availability for care in the private sector or a combination of those options.

In signing this executive order, Shulkin said, the president has provided "clear guidance to further ensure our veterans and their families know that we are focusing on ways to improve their ability to move forward and achieve their goals in life after service".

Shulkin identified veteran suicide as one of the administration's top priorities, stating that veterans who left the military within a year are almost twice as likely to commit suicide as any other age group.

Shulkin said suicide among veterans is his top clinical priority, and that he determined that people who have left the military within a year are between 1 1/2 to two times as likely to commit suicide as any other age group.

Veterans who received an other-than-honorable discharge will continue to be eligible only for emergency services, officials said.

The new order will cost about $200 million year to implement, money that will be diverted from the agencies' current budgets, a senior administration official said. His focus is on eliminating the statistic showing 20 veteran suicides every day.

"I am committed to reducing veteran suicides through support and education".
