Canada says outbreak over

Canada says outbreak over

If you've somehow missed the huge warnings so far, we beg of you: Do not eat romaine lettuce.

Canadian health officials linked the outbreak to romaine lettuce. At that point, there were 17 sick in 13 states.

The CDC on Wednesday, however, continued to avoid pinpointing romaine as the source, saying there's no reason to avoid any particular food at this time.

Ian Williams, chief of the CDC's Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch has said that there have been no new cases of E. coli infection since December 2017 but warned that the outbreak is not yet over and caution is warranted. Similarly the Canadian health authorities have blamed the romaine lettuce but not identified the actual source of the infection i.e. the distributor or the farm that is contaminated with the said bacteria.

No new cases have been diagnosed in the past month, but that doesn't mean it's over, he added.

Consumer Reports say you should also stay away from romaine lettuce served in a cafeteria or restaurant.

There has been one death and nine people have been hospitalized, including two with kidney failure, CNN reported. For STEC O157:H7 infections, this period can be two to three weeks. The infections are all due to E. coli O157:H7 strain of the bacteria that produces the Shiga toxin.

CDC and FDA will continue to update the public as more information on the outbreak source is uncovered. The heads have a shelf life of 7 to 10 days, while chopped or leaf lettuce products have a shelf life of 3 to 5 days. "You can't taste, smell or see E. coli, which is what makes it so unsafe". It's also important to avoid preparing food when you are sick, particularly if you are sick with diarrhea.

"The Public Health Agency of Canada is no longer advising individuals in affected provinces to consider consuming other types of lettuce, instead of romaine lettuce", it said.

Marler Clark, The Food Safety Law Firm, is the nation's leading law firm representing victims of E. coli outbreaks and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Marler Clark is the only law firm in the nation with a practice focused exclusively on foodborne illness litigation. Romaine lettuce is mostly eaten raw and washing it or any produce tainted with E. coli will not remove the harmful bacteria. The law firm has brought E. coli lawsuits against such companies as Jack in the Box, Dole, ConAgra, Cargill, and Jimmy John's.
