Google makes little noise buying United Kingdom sound tech startup Redux

Redux's main investor was Arie Capital, a United Kingdom -based venture and private equity company, which invested $5 million.

Redux is led by its CEO Nedko Ivanov, formerly CEO of BullGuard, John Kavanagh who hails from IBM and CapGemini, David Gammie, who has formerly at Plastic Logic, and Nimrata Boora who came from Deloitte and then HiWave Technology.

Google has snapped up the tech to make full-screen smartphones without an iPhone X style notch, using the touchscreen itself as a speaker.

Redux has invented and developed a technology that helps eliminate the need for speakers in mobile phones, freeing up valuable space for batteries or other add-ons.

It's not yet known when Alphabet - through an Ireland-based subsidiary of Google - bought the startup, but United Kingdom regulatory filings show that the transfer of shares was completed in mid-December.

Google has yet to comment on a purchase price, or any other aspect of the acquisition.

It also has technologies that add haptic feedback on mobile displays, which provides vibrations to imitate what it feels like to push physical buttons.

Some of Redux's tech has already appeared in PCs and vehicle infotainment systems. The Pixel 2 in particular had very thick bezels that's very much the same size as its predecessor. The notion that Google could do away with dedicated speakers in future Pixel phones sounds like an even more appealing option, however.

It is unclear what work the Redux team will do for Google, or already has been doing, but it's possible that they could be working to use the technology to improve the sound quality of Google's own smartphones.

It remains to be seen what Google's plans are for this technology. At the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas this week, Google is heavily promoting its voice-controlled speakers that compete with Amazon.com Inc.'s Echo device.
