SC orders new SIT to probe 1984 riot cases

Besides Justice Dhingra, retired IG rank officer Rajdeep Singh and serving IPS officer Abhishek Dular would be part of the SIT, which has been asked to submit its status report within two months.

A total of 3,325 people were killed in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and other states in the riots after Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Kishori Lal, dubbed as the "butcher of Trilokpuri", was among those sentenced by Dhingra.

SIT had earlier closed 186 cases connected to the anti-Sikh riots.

Abhishek Dular, who served as Superintendent of Police in Shimla, is now on central deputation with CBI and has probed the sensational Bulandsahar highway gangrape case. "Regard being had to the nature of the case, we think it appropriate that a fresh SIT should be constituted for carrying on further investigation", the CJI-led bench said and posted the matter to Thursday for passing of necessary orders.

"The cases should be monitored by Supreme Court as it was done in Gujarat riot cases and resulted in a few convictions", he added.

That SIT was to examine the necessity of further investigation into them.

The 241 cases were scrutinised by the Supervisory Committee comprising former Supreme Court Justices J.M. Panchal and K.S. Radhakrishnan.

Over two years and three-term extensions later, the SIT finally stated in 2017 that it had closed 241 cases and filed charges in just 12 cases.

In a major decision, the Supreme Court of India has ordered re-investigation of the cases relating to the unprecedented anti-Sikh riots which broke out late in 1984.
