American man charged with Calgary swatting incident

A California man arrested in a "swatting" incident that led to the death of a Wichita man faces similar charges in Canada.

Police say a man believed to be Barris called Calgary 911 December 22nd, claiming he shot his father and was holding his mom and younger brother hostage.

As officers were trying to confirm the report, another 911 call came in from a woman living at the address who said she believed she was the victim of a swatting call.

The investigation led to California. Andrew Finch was shot by cops on December 28 in Wichita after the prankster called 911 with a story about a shooting and kidnapping at Finch's Wichita home.

"During this incident, a substantial amount of police resources were required to contain the scene and protect the safety of citizens", police say. They said they believed the victim was targeted because of her online persona and that Barriss was responsible for similar calls in other jurisdictions.

The bogus call had been reportedly made after a dispute over a small wager during an online video game tournament, according to gaming news service Dexerto. She exited her home and police confirmed the initial shooting and hostage scenario report had been a hoax. Calgary Police's cyber/forensics unit identified Barriss as the suspect, as he had been in contact with the woman earlier that day.

Swatting is when a call is made to police claiming that a major incident, often involving hostages, is unfolding at a residence and usually results in a tactical team being deployed. Andrew Finch was shot by Wichita Police a short time after officers responded.

Tyler Raj Barriss has been charged with public mischief, fraud and mischief. He was released from the Los Angeles County jail last year after serving less than half of a two-year and eight month sentence for phoning in two fake bomb threats in 2015 that cleared out the KABC-TV studio in nearby Glendale.

Barriss is also scheduled to appear in court in an extradition hearing to send him to Kansas, where he's the suspect in a case where Wichita, Kansas police shot and killed an innocent man.

Barriss is facing a charge of false alarm in Kansas.
