Erdogan Supports Rouhani, Says Turkey Values Iranian Stability

A source in Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's office said he discussed the week-long unrest in Iran during a telephone call with Rouhani.

"The US court... has interfered in Turkey's domestic affairs in an unprecedented way based on so-called evidence that is only fit for forgery and political abuse", the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

A Manhattan federal jury convicted a Turkish banker Wednesday of participating in a multibillion-dollar scheme to evade Iran sanctions in a sensitive case that has roiled diplomatic relations between the United States and the president of Turkey.

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said on Twitter the jury's decision does not carry legal value in Turkey. Later on Wednesday, Atilla was convicted on charges that he took part in a complex scheme where Iran traded its oil and gas for gold, with some of the proceeds moved through US financial institutions without their knowledge.

When that failed, Zarrab agreed to plead guilty and lay out the story in court just a few weeks before the trial was to begin, leaving Atilla alone at the defense table.

However, last March, when Zarrab inexplicably brought his family to America for a vacation at Disney World, U.S. authorities arrested him in Florida for engaging in conspiracies to violate sanctions, commit bank fraud, and launder money.

He was cleared of one count of money laundering. The paper also notes the court has prepared an "extradition request to be sent to the US for the suspect".

The Turkish police officer, Huseyin Korkmaz, testified that he was a top investigator in a smuggling and bribery probe that led to the jailing of Zarrab and others in the sanctions scheme in 2013.

Charges against him were ultimately dropped, but he was arrested in Miami in 2016, and eventually agreed under pressure to testify in the United States case over violating Iran sanctions in a plea bargain. Erdogan has publicly dismissed the case as a politically motivated attack on his government.

The case relied in part on documents and wiretaps from a 2013 Turkish corruption probe that were spirited out of the country by a former Istanbul police official, Huseyin Korkmaz, who also testified in the NY trial.

Cathy Fleming, one of Atilla's lawyers, said they planned to appeal.

Atilla will be sentenced in April.

Turkey contends that Korkmaz is an operative of cleric Fethullah Gulen, an Erdogan rival living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.

"For years, Mehmet Hakan Atilla conspired to use the American financial system to conduct millions of dollars worth of illegal transactions on behalf of the Government of Iran", said Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Dana J. Boente.
