Funeral for Mormon president set for January 12

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Thomas S. Monson, considered a prophet by almost 16 million Mormons worldwide, has died at the age of 90 after a almost a decade as church president. In a worldwide church where leadership at the level of president and apostle is essentially a life-long appointment, this isn't a novel event to most members.

So yes, our governing church body is headed by the prophet and president of the church with his two counselors (who make up the First Presidency), followed thereafter by the quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The announcement of his death garnered an outpouring of reactions and remembrances from various Mormon politicians, according to Fox13.

"He also served as president of the LDS Church's Canadian Mission, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, from 1959 to 1962".

Mormon Counselor Dieter F. Uchtdorf said in a release that "he was a member of the Church everyone could relate to and everyone could feel comfortable in his presence". "Our thoughts and prayers are with his three children and the rest of the Monson family", he said. He was a traditionalist that was known for strong storytelling, mostly about growing up in his native Salt Lake City and receiving visions from the Holy Spirit for his calling. He has given this kind of selfless service because that is who he is.

"Help out another person on that day to improve his or her life".

His wife, Frances Monson, died in May 2013.

"I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of President Thomas S. Monson", Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski said. As a result, President Monson's legacy will continue to be an influence for good in the lives of countless individuals and families for generations to come. Orrin Hatch, who said of Monson, "Service was his motto and humility his hallmark".

One of Monson's notable decisions came in October 2012, when he changed the age requirements for missionaries, which allowed for tens of thousands more Mormons to be sent on mission trips around the world. His cause of death was said to be his degraded health condition due to his age.

He also created more conciliation for historical tragedies.

Following tradition, Russell M. Nelson, who is the senior apostle, would be next in line to become the 17th prophet. Out of respect for Monson, his successor will not be officially named until after his funeral services on January 12.

"Sustained as an Apostle at the age of 36, President Monson was one of the youngest men to be called to this position", his website says.

Monson's death late Tuesday evening was announced by the church in an email from spokesman Eric Hawkins.
