Iran firm says there may be survivors from tanker crash

On February 20, 2017, the IG restarted providing almost full coverage of reinsurance of around $7.8 billion per tanker for shipping Iranian oil, in addition to resuming reinsurance coverage for NITC tankers.

South Korean petrochemical company Hanwha Total Co., a 50-50 partnership between the Seoul-based Hanwha Group and French oil giant Total, said in an email to the AP it had contracted the Sanchi to import Iranian condensate to South Korea. Since then, Sanchi has been ablaze and drifting in the waters between Shanghai and southern Japan.

There is still hope of finding survivors after an Iranian oil tanker burst into flames following a collision in the East China Sea, the tanker's owners have said.

It is the second crash by an Iranian oil tanker to take place in 18 months, after an Iranian supertanker crashed with a container ship in the Singapore Strait back in July 2016. China's Ministry of Transport said on Monday that a body had been recovered.

There was no further word about the others missing since the Panamanian-registered Sanchi collided with a freighter.

State broadcaster China Central Television, citing Chinese officials, said none of the 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis who have been missing since the collision late Saturday have been found as of 8 a.m. Monday. The 21 members of the Crystal's all-Chinese crew were rescued.

Chinese media has shared footage of oil tanker Sanchi puffing black clouds of smoke as rescue boats try to douse the flames.

Operated by Iran's National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), the vessel was taking light crude oil condensate to South Korea.

The cause of the collision and damage to the tanker were not clear.

The weather has also hindered efforts to extinguish the fire on the Iranian ship, which has been alight for three days.

China, South Korea and the USA have sent ships and planes to search for the Sanchi's crew, all of whom remain missing. China has reportedly sent eight ships to help while South Korea and the United States have sent one.

That warning of a potential environmental disaster has come for South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Still, condensate is highly volatile when exposed to air and water, and concerns were growing the tanker could explode and sink.
