MacOS App Store Preferences Open With Any Password

An editor at The Verge tested this and confirms the bug exists. Second, the ability to unlock these preferences with any password is only available to local admins, and standard user accounts aren't affected.

While those settings leave limited options for malicious activity, a threat actor could set up additional attacks by preventing the machine from automatically downloading and installing necessary updates, including those that patch security flaws.

An Apple developer has uncovered another embarrassing vulnerability in macOS High Sierra, aka version 10.13, that lets someone bypass part of the operating system's password protections. Being able to change preferences in the App Store allows you to change the schedules for app updates, system updates, and security updates.

Assuming the attacker would be able to gain such access, they would still only be able to change the user's preferences in the App Store.

'These settings are unlocked by default for admin users, entering a bogus password only works if you're logged in as an admin user and the settings in this panel aren't particularly sensitive.

Apple's Mac password troubles aren't over yet. Enter any username and password you want and press Unlock and the App Store system preferences will become unlocked.

Numerous settings within the App Store System Preferences window are also protected behind your Apple ID password and can't be changed using this method, but a nefarious user with physical access to your Mac could toggle the options that fall under the automatic update section.

The bug comes hot on the heels of a previous "root user" password flaw discovered in December.

The latest issue is reported to have been addressed in the latest beta version of macOS 10.13.3.

'Our customers deserve better.

Apple pledged to review its software development process in early December 2017, after a researcher discovered a bug that could give hackers total control of vulnerable machines.

Apple has also introduced a fix in the latest beta of macOS (version 10.13.3), which should show up in an update sometime later this month.
