Macron vows to keep up pace of reforms

President Emmanuel Macron will meet his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Paris on January 5 to discuss bilateral relations as well as the Middle East issues, according to French president's office.

According to the new law, websites would have to say who is financing them and the amount of money for sponsored content would be capped.

President Macron broke with tradition by addressing all Europeans rather than only his compatriots in a new year broadcast in which he promised to lead a French renaissance.

'When fake news is spread, it will be possibleto go to a judge and if appropriate have content taken down, user accounts deleted and ultimately websites blocked'. He also suggested that there may be spending caps on how much people can spend on sponsored content during election periods. The president said the measure was to "protect liberal democracies".

He came out strongly in support of press freedom and said that it is the "highest expression of freedom".

The French leader also promised to press ahead with economic and social reforms at the same fast pace since his election in May, including a change in French laws to push toward more gender equality.

The president was victim of a fake news smear attack himself just prior to France's presidential election past year, with genuine leaked emails being leaked out mixed up with false information that painted him in a bad light.

In a speech to journalists Wednesday, Macron made a reference to Hungary and Poland and their recent crackdown on media freedom. The French President specifically turned his attention to the Russian media, accusing TV channel RT that during the campaign it caused disinformation through its website and social media.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Thursday for Western nations to play a greater role in ending the war in Syria, saying the crisis could not be resolved by just "a few" foreign powers.
