Mamata Banerjee receives D Litt from Calcutta varsity

Journalists accompanying West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her trip to London in November a year ago were caught stealing silverware at an official dinner in a city hotel, media reports have claimed. At the acceptance speech, Mamata said, "Intolerance is rising in the country".

Earlier on Oct 25 a year ago, following a meeting of the university's Senate-Syndicate, CU's Vice-Chancellor (VC), Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, announced to award Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with honourary D.Litt degree during the prestigious institute's convocation in south Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha. On October 25 CU vice chancellor Sonali Chakraborti announced the D.Lit to be conferred to Ms Banerjee for her contribution in the field of arts, literature and social work.

He reasoned that those who have made a decision to confer the honour to the chief minister are the CU senate members who are appointed by the state government which is headed by Ms Banerjee as its chief minister. History should not be distorted.

"India has diversity of origin and we should respect that", she added. "It's unprecedented and not consistent with the law of the university", said Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee, advocate of the Ranjugopal Mukherjee, former vice chancellor of the North Bengal University.

The petitioner mentioned that conferring the degree to Banerjee will undermine the standard of the university and the prestige of the award.

During the hearing yesterday in court, the West Bengal government argued that the petition was "politically motivated", and that it did not amount to public interest.

Claiming that the petition "is out and out in political interest", Dutta submitted that "except character assassination, nothing is there".
