Noncigarette tobacco product use is associated with future cigarette smoking

"Although e-cigarettes are the most common form of non-cigarette tobacco used by youths (exceeding cigarette use), any use of all forms of non-cigarette tobacco was independently associated with greater risk of future cigarette smoking; risk was greatest with use of multiple products, a use pattern that is increasing among youths", the researchers wrote.

King also recommends smokers trying to quit ask their doctor about specific tools that could help, such as nicotine-replacement therapy, classes created to help you stop smoking, counseling and medication; avoid substances such as alcohol that tend to weaken commitment; replace tobacco with healthier oral stimulation like gum; and exercise to provide a boost and help prevent weight gain that can happen when smokers eat when they feel the urge to light up. Those who had tried two or more products were 3.8 times more likely to be smoking.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 90 percent of adult smokers tried their first cigarette before the age of 18.

In-Depth [cohort study]: This study used a sample of 10,384 never-cigarette-smoking youths of ages 12 to 17 years from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study to determine the association between noncigarette tobacco product use and later cigarette smoking. Then they asked if the teen had ever smoked a cigarette.

The report, published Tuesday in JAMA Pediatrics, comes as e-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular among adolescents.

"Products like e cigarettes are essentially gateways to smoking cigarettes", Chandler said. When re-interviewed one year later, 4.6 percent of the group reported that they had now smoked a cigarette.

Chaffee also observed that all the different forms of non-cigarette tobacco explored in the study were linked to the same increase in risk of future cigarette smoking.

Study Limitations: The study accounted for known risk factors of youth smoking but other unknown factors may have influenced study results.

And in another report released Tuesday, researchers said that almost 3 million American teens had been exposed to online marketing of tobacco, as cigarette manufacturers have shifted their marketing strategies from traditional forms of media to the internet.

"We should think about the overall public health burden, and their potential to convert non-cigarette users to cigarette users, when we are making choices about the regulation of these product", Watkins said.

In 2016, the FDA banned the sale of e-cigarettes and other such products to anyone younger than 18.

"I'm perhaps surprised about how similar the relationships were for each product across the board", Watkins said.

Rogers says the high rate of smoking in Louisiana can be linked directly to the tobacco companies themselves and the way they fabricate what they do.
