Oakland Raiders to offer Jon Gruden head coaching job

If the Oakland Raiders really are zeroing in on Jon Gruden, they created an opening by firing Jack Del Rio on Sunday.

It was recently reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were Gruden's preferred destination if he returned to coaching; Gruden was Tampa Bay's coach from 2002-2008 and won the Super Bowl in his first season with the team. He was sacked by the Buccaneers following the 2008 season and has been in the broadcast booth since then. There have been multiple reports over the past couple of days linking the Raiders to Gruden, and the rumors continued to swirl Saturday as the reports intensified.

"If that's the case, than Oakland will be getting a great head coach and somebody that's been instrumental in helping me personally out".

At this point, it seems inevitable that Jon Gruden will return to coaching in the National Football League with the Oakland Raiders.

"It's simple, you don't make that move with Jack Del Rio, unless you know you can get Jon Gruden", Schefter said. I'm very confident. I feel like I can fit one in behind a corner's face. But, it's a results business.

"I appreciate the players and coaches and all the hard work, all the effort and energy. When he knows, I think we'll all know". The Raiders must comply with the "Rooney Rule" and interview at least one minority candidate during the hiring process. Right now, the Raiders sit at 6-9, with three straight losses, have already been eliminated from playoff contention and are headed to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in the regular season finale.

The Raiders could soon have a Gruden Grinder as their head coach. Yeah, sometimes owners. Guys want to bounce ideas off me.

But this time, Gruden would be given enough power in Oakland to be able to reshape the front office, coaching staff and entire organization, though there still are some holdovers from when he coached there. Sunday after Oakland's loss to the Chargers in Week 17, Del Rio was sacked, on his way to his postgame press conference at that. "Cant disagree with that". Del Rio went 12-4 with the Raiders in 2016, ending a 14-year playoff drought, and signed a contract extension prior to the 2017 season.

Vermeil coached the Philadelphia Eagles in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In short, pumping new life into the offense is a must for the team in the offseason if Del Rio expects to remain on the Raiders roster.

The Buccaneers never finished better than 19th in yards or 20th in points scored, winning 17 games in those three seasons. Were upset at ourselves.
