That Jewish Lawyer Moore's Wife Mentioned? He Contributed to Doug Jones' Campaign

At the final campaign rally for Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore before the special election last month, Moore's wife Kayla insisted that it was "fake news" that the couple was anti-Semitic. Doug Jones, D-Ala., at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018. "Thank you, Alabama. You've elected a man of incredible integrity, grit, and character". As a former U.S. Attorney, Senator Jones brings to Congress his experience fighting for the most vulnerable among us.

Walter Mondale, who was vice president during the Carter administration, was also there as Smith took the oath.

But McCrary said Jones could still craft a brand similar to that of other red-state Democrats, proving to voters he is an independent senator who is laser-focused on issues affecting his state.

Rich Hobson announced on Wednesday that he is running as a Republican for the 2nd District congressional seat now held by Rep. Martha Roby.

Jones, meanwhile, has said it's time to move on.

For two months, more than 160 HRC volunteers and 11 HRC staff worked to reach the almost 200,000 "Equality Voters" across Alabama - a voting bloc comprised of not only the 60,000 LGBTQ voters in the state, but also the thousands of additional allies HRC has identified statewide. Jay Rockefeller (Democrat of West Virginia), will be legislative director. "It is my honest hope that we can do so in a renewed spirit of comity, collegiality, and bipartisanship", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said as he kicked off the second session of the 115th Congress.

Jones, who defeated his Republican opponent, Roy Moore, in a tight special election, saw massive support in the Black community.

After his election to Attorney General Jeff Sessions' former seat, Jones promised to hire a diverse staff that "reflected the diversity of Alabama" when he went into the Senate.

Jones' victory left Trump's Republicans even less room for defections from within their party as they pursue legislative initiatives such as an infrastructure plan, entitlement changes and scaling back Obama-era regulations on industry.

Hilliard believes having Gresham as Jones' chief of staff will pay dividends to Alabama.

"Based on what I saw during (Jones') campaign, the Republican leadership shouldn't be expecting him to vote with them very many times", said Jim Manley, an aide to former Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
