Trump's Offshore Plan Unlikely To Spark Drilling Rush

Trump's Offshore Plan Unlikely To Spark Drilling Rush

Late Tuesday night after U.S. Secretary of Interior met with Governor Rick Scott to discuss off-shore drilling in Florida, the federal government announced it's decision to take oil drilling in Florida waters off the table.

Rick Scott voiced opposition soon after the plan's January 4 release, a letter submitted by the state Department of Environmental Protection a year ago did not oppose the drilling plan or ask for Florida to be exempted. "I want to keep our coast pristine", said Governor Scott.

The electorally crucial Sunshine State has picked the presidential victor for six consecutive elections and is the winter home of Trump, who regularly works out of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach.

Florida's exemption from the renewal of offshore drilling raised suspicions that Gov. Rick Scott's political affiliation - Republican - his closeness to President Trump, and the location of Trump's beachfront Mar-a-Lago resort, aka the winter White House, in Florida were factors in Zinke's decision.

"With America more energy secure now than ever, Trump's fear-mongering and falsehoods about our country's energy supply reveal a shameless agenda to prop up oil and gas industries at the expense of coastal fishing, recreation economies and the environment", Wyden said. We chose to measure whether Scott had shifted his position on our Flip-O-Meter.

Zinke said there would be no new drilling or platforms, but seismic testing would be allowed, according to Politico.

"Securing reliable sources of energy helps fuel other industries like tourism, especially in states like Florida that relies on more than 200 million barrels of gasoline and diesel each year to fuel its economy".

"Floridians should beware and they should make their objections known because if we don't, then the administration will try to say they never heard objections", Nelson said from the Senate floor.

Zinke announced a proposal on January 4 to open almost the entirety of the Outer Continental Shelf for offshore drilling, in areas ranging from Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Scott also may run for a U.S. Senate seat against Democrat Bill Nelson. But now, suddenly, Secretary Zinke announces plans to drill off Florida's coast and four days later agrees to "take Florida off the table"?

Scott is a political ally of President Donald Trump, who happens to own beachfront property in Florida.

Maryland, South Carolina and MA are among states with Republican governors also known to oppose the Draft Five Year Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Programme (2019-2024).

Instead, the letter warned about the effects of oil and gas activities on the environment and urged that "long-term protection of Florida's sensitive coastal and marine resources should be of paramount concern" in developing a drilling plan.

The American Petroleum Institute, the top oil and gas lobbying group, also questioned Zinke's action — but from the other direction. "Meanwhile, more frequent oil spills and more intense ocean acidification and warming are guaranteed to ensue", Noah Oppenheim, executive director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations, said in a prepared statement.
