Turkey summons U.S. diplomat for supporting Syrian Kurd group

Turkey on Wednesday summoned a top USA diplomat in Ankara to protest Washington's support of a Kurdish militia in Syria, sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry said, the latest in a long-standing disagreement between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Kosnett is the most senior U.S. diplomat in Ankara after the departure Ambassador John Bass in late 2017.

The People's Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, is seen by the United States as the most effective ground partner for the US-led coalition fighting ISIL in Syria. Turkey also sees the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and believes it is waging an insurgency against the Turkish state.

Wednesday's move was not the first time Turkey has expressed displeasure with the USA about the issue. In 2017, to prevent Turkish-backed forces from overtaking Manbij, the USA deployed its Special Forces in town, while a small Russian Special Operations team appeared in Afrin, apparently for the same reason-to keep the Turks at bay.

On January 9, the Russian and Iranian ambassadors were reportedly called to the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara to receive a protest note.

In October, the YPG and their allies announced the capture of ISIL's self-declared capital of Raqqa in Syria after a four-month operation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had warned Russian Federation and Iran to adhere to their joint accord signed with Turkey past year for announcing "de-escalation zone" in Syrian town Idlib.

Russia, Iran and Turkey are supposed to be the guarantors of last year's accord but Moscow and Tehran appear bent on reneging on their role to de-escalate fighting in the area, home to almost 2 million Syrians, to serve their own agenda. Daesh (IS) terrorists were moved from different parts of the country to Idlib under certain understandings.

"Iran and Russian Federation need to carry out their responsibilities". He told Anadolu news agency that ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies could be damaged further if Washington does not correct its mistakes, Reuters said.

However, Syrian regime forces, with Russian backing have stepped up attacks trying to regain control of the area controlled by the rebels.
