US punishes two North Korean officials

Military-related tours made up the largest portion at 44 percent, in line with Kim's recurring appearances in photos that depicted the North's nuclear and missile development program throughout the year.

As NPR's Jackie Northam reported last month, it's not clear whether increasing sanctions on North Korea will be likely to influence the rogue nation's behavior.

This missile flew higher and farther than any other previous tests and came came after a break of nearly two months in testing. It also conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test so far on September 3. It considers these as blackmail tactics and will continue with its nuclear weapon programs and missile tests. The test was Pyongyang's third ICMB test this year and its 20th ballistic missile launch of this year.

The sanctions, drafted by the USA, ban almost 90 percent of petroleum exports to the country.

Bern has expanded its sanctions on North Korea, bringing itself in line with the United Nations Security Council, which recently updated its list of sanctioned individuals, companies and organisations. Hua Chunying, foreign ministry spokeswoman, told reporters in Beijing that while she was not aware of the Chosun article, only ships that had specifically been targeted with sanctions could be construed to be violating them.

A recent report claimed that North Korea was testing biological weapons to load them with anthrax warheads. The two officials are said to be behind the missile program.

According to data from Eurostat on Thursday, the European Union's 28 countries issued fewer North Koreans visas to remain within their borders for more than three months. The materials for their construction tend to be cheap, and their detonation tends not to leave radioactive fallout or collapse a mountain on critical research personnel.

The ship was caught as it was transferring oil to a vessel belonging to North Korea.

This Nov. 29, 2017, image provided by the North Korean government on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, third from left, and what the North Korean government calls the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, in North Korea. Those two were later dropped so the sanctions could receive the support of Russian Federation and China.

The clandestine oil trade apparently started soon after new sanctions capped the amount of oil products North Korea was allowed to import. Last year, the Obama administration singled out a number of senior officials - including Kim Jong Un himself - for sanctions, citing human rights violations.
