EurAsia Cup set to get underway in Shah Alam

EurAsia Cup set to get underway in Shah Alam

Thomas Bjorn dismissed any suggestions that his Europe-led contingent will steamroll to another landslide victory over Team Asia at the EurAsia Cup which begins on Friday at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Kuala Lumpur.

"I don't want to ever sound cocky with a team like Europe, and I'm not going to get cocky, but it's a great start, " Asia captain Arjun Atwal said.

Noren is joined by the likes of reigning Race to Dubai victor Tommy Fleetwood, former Open champion Henrik Stenson, Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey and Rafa Cabrera-Bello in a formidable European team that will present their Asian counterparts with a stiff challenge.

The Wicklow golfer is now seventh on the European Points List and sixth on the World Points List in terms of Ryder Cup qualification, which means he's in the automatic qualification spots for the showdown with America in Paris later this year.

Captain Thomas Bjorn promised Europe will return stronger in the six foursome matches on Saturday.

The last time the event was played, a European team led by Darren Clarke romped to an 18 1/2-5 1/2 blowout win over their Asian counterparts in the second edition of the biennial matchplay contest in 2016.

Seasoned Ryder Cup golfer Paul Casey of England and France's Alex Levy completes Team Europe as the two wildcards picked by Bjorn. "I've asked him to fulfill a dual role as a senior player and he has really taken to it". That's something that says a lot about those 12 players in there.

The EurAsia Cup will feature 24 matches, with one day of six Fourball matches, followed by six Foursome matches and 12 Singles matches on the third day. I'm very proud of that, and I've desperately missed it, and I want to play another one.

"I think the whole match play feeling, you see it at The Ryder Cup, and obviously the USA guys have the Presidents Cup". We have played so much golf together.

The Indian captain has also turned to golf ace Tiger Woods for advice as he aims to inspire his team.

"I'm really enjoying it (captaincy)".

"I really think it will really help to hopefully have a few more events like this and grow the game even more".

"Definitely everybody knows we are underdogs, except my team. You can be underdogs on paper, but once the matches start, anything can happen". "What I'm looking for is someone to hit longer for me and that will be easier for me", said the 27-year-old Sabahan. There's two guys playing in Japan, two or three guys playing on the PGA Tour, two on The European Tour, four or five on the Asian Tour.
