Four Sam's Club Stores Shuttering in Arizona; 63 Closing Nationwide

However, Anne Hatfield from Walmart Corporate Communications confirmed that no Sam's Clubs will be closing in Austin or in Central Texas. A phone call to that store on Thursday produced a recorded message.

The retailer declined to say how many jobs would be cut but the closures could affect up to about 11,000 jobs as part of the closings.

The company said it will provide support and resources to affected employees.

Sam's Club has made a decision to close some of its stores across the country.

Walmart is boosting the minimum hourly wage for its US employees to $11 and dishing out bonuses of up to $1,000, crediting President Trump's tax cut for enabling the move. Roughly 10 of those locations closed their doors as soon as Thursday, while the remainder will be shuttered over the next three to four weeks, the Walmart official said.

The news of the closings came on the same day that Sam's Club's parent company, Wal-Mart, announced it was boosting its starting salary for all us workers, including those at Sam's Club, to $11 an hour and handing out one-time cash bonuses.

Three Richmond-area Sam's Club stores remain open - one on West Broad Street in Henrico's West End, one on Wal-Mart Way in Midlothian, and one on South Park Boulevard in Colonial Heights.

BJ's Wholesale Club said in a statement that it has received "numerous inquiries from Sam's Club employees" since the news of the shutdowns were announced, adding that it is accepting resumes. The amount will range up to $1,000 for employees who have been with Walmart for at least 20 years.

The US retailing giant presented a bitter-sweet pill for its workforce as it also announced an increase in minimum wages. All hourly employees at this facility will be terminated effective April 13, 2018. The one-time bonus represents a payment of about $400 million in the current fiscal year, which ends January 31.

Full-time hourly employees will also become eligible for 10 weeks of paid maternity leave and six weeks of paternity leave, along with financial assistance to associates who adopt a child.
