Swatting suspect makes first court appearance

Peter Siegenthaler said there's a good indication that the accused - Tyler Raj Barriss - is the same man charged in a similar incident six days later that led police in Wichita, Kan., to fatally shoot an unarmed man.

A message left for the local public defender's office wasn't immediately returned.

Sedgwick County Jail records show Tyler Barriss was booked at 3:14 p.m. Thursday for involuntary manslaughter, giving false alarm and interference with law enforcement (falsely reporting a felony). Asked if he had any questions after his charge was formally read, Barriss answered, "no, I don't".

Prosecutors allege he made a call from Los Angeles on December 28 with a fake story about a shooting and kidnapping at a home in Wichita.

Barriss is being held on a bond of $500,000.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said once Barriss makes his first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court, details of the charges filed will be made public.

A man accused in a "swatting" hoax that led to a fatal shooting in Kansas has been charged in Calgary, how Atlantic Canadians fared in an honesty test, and a Tim Hortons boycott.

Prosecutors are also reviewing a Wichita police officer's decision to shoot Finch, Bennett said. Calgary police are charging Barriss with mischief and fraud. Wichita police say he was given commands to keep his hands raised, but he reached toward his waistline multiple times, police have said.

"There is no other situation quite like this to reference", Bennett said.

Reports say Barriss was called by someone after a feud between two Call of Duty players broke out over a virtual "friendly kill" during a game earlier that day. The officer, identified only as a seven-year veteran of the Wichita Police Department, was placed on leave after the shooting, authorities have said. The woman involved in the Calgary incident reportedly told police that Barriss targeted her because of her online presence, according to Rolling Stone.

Barriss was arrested by the LAPD this month and agreed to waive extradition and be taken to Kansas to face charges.
