Ford Ranger Production to Begin in Late 2018

Ford Ranger Production to Begin in Late 2018

Ford discontinued the Ranger in the North American market back in 2011.The market is home to Ford's best-selling model, the larger F-150 pick-up.

DETROIT, Michigan-It seemed perfectly reasonable seven years ago that Ford might remove the Ranger midsize pickup truck from the USA market forever. This truck segment includes the Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado.

At the 2017 North American International Auto Show, Ford announced it would be returning to the North-American mid-size pickup segment with a Ranger. Ford says that the truck will not be in dealer showrooms until early 2019, giving competitors another year to solidify their gains in a class they now have to themselves.

The company is leaning on its reputation for trucks for the North American relaunch of a truck it once sold hundreds of thousands of. Globally, the Ford Ranger design is distinct for its fast windshield, high beltline, and short front overhangs, which make for good approach/departure angles.

"Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of truck fans", said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president, product development and purchasing. "The all-new Ranger is designed for today's midsize truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability, and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends".

The company said at last year's North American International Auto Show that there's vast consumer demand for the truck.

Analysts have said Ford might cut into F-150 sales by releasing the Ranger in the US, but Ford executives have said F-150 shoppers are typically completely different from those who'd look to buy a Ranger.

Missing from Ford's information about the new 2019 Ranger are numbers - any of them.

The truck will be available in XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels with chrome or sport appearance options. It sends power and braking to each individual wheel to help the FX Off-Road Ranger crawl over surface when things get technical. Per the estimated EPA fuel economy rating, Ford says the final figures will be released this spring. That has four drive modes - normal; grass, gravel and snow; mud and ruts; and sand - that can be flipped between while the Ranger is in motion. The tailgate, front fenders, and hood are all aluminum, in keeping with one of the F-Series major brand identifiers.

Of course, Ford promises a body-on-frame construction, with a frame and bumpers made out of high-strength steel. The truck was designed with an athletic look in mind, which truck buyers favor.

In addition to the Terrain Management tech, a system Ford calls Trail Control will debut on Rangers outfitted with the FX4 Off-Road package. Lane keep assist and lane departure warning will be standard on the XLT and Lariat, and automatic cruise control will be standard on the Lariat. There are numerous optional driver-assist features, too.

Interior changes for North America include a revised steering wheel, shifter and controls along with different trim colors and available Sync3 connectivity. Its Sync 3 works off an eight-inch information/entertainment screen.

While Ford's U.S. PR declined to provide detailed specifications at an embargoed preview, the United Kingdom version of the Ranger is 211 inches long, on a 126.8-inch wheelbase, and 71-72 inches tall. Now Ford has brought the 2019 Ranger to the 2018 NAIAS, intending to sell it next year. This year, it will replace the Focus and the C-Max there. Ford Focus production will move from MI to China.

The 2019 Ranger is designed for off-roading and family camping and kayaking trips.
