Iran refuses renegotiation of nuclear deal despite United States pressures

Iran also refused to accept any changes to its 2015 nuclear deal with the world powers.

President Donald Trump on Friday delivered an ultimatum to America's European allies to fix the "terrible flaws" in the Iran nuclear deal, or he'll pull the US out in a few months' time.

In addition to making this decision, the Trump administration has placed new sanctions on 14 Iranian regime persons and entities, including senior judicial figures in the country.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said it was a "desperate attempt" to undermine a "solid" deal.Germany said it would continue to call for the deal's full implementation and would consult on a "common way forward" with the United Kingdom and France. However, time after time, President Trump has (perhaps reluctantly) certified that Iran was cooperating with the deal.

Rejecting the allegations that the Europeans did not support Trump's administration because of their economic interests, the deputy foreign minister said "it would be a big mistake to think that Europeans did that for their economic interests".

Whether the U.S. and European partners will be able to agree on a supplemental deal by May that strengthens the nuclear agreement is far from clear.

The foreign ministry vowed to retaliate but did not say what form any action might take.

The official added that President Trump intends to "work with our European partners on some kind of follow-on agreement that enshrines certain triggers that the Iranian regime can not exceed related to ballistic missiles, related to nuclear breakout period that holds them to one year or less, would hold them to inspections and would have no sunset clause".

Additionally, along with pushing the deal back to Congress, the President authorized the U.S. Treasury to impose sanctions on Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which he called a "corrupt personal terror force".

The statement was made in the wake of US President Donald Trump's announcement on January 12 of his decision to waive sanctions on Iran as required by the JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal.

The US still maintains sanctions on Iran - independent of the nuclear deal - on matters such as terrorism, human rights and ballistic missile development.

Since the change in administrations, the State Department likewise has certified that Iran is in "technical compliance" with the deal. It now expires after a decade. "Rather than repeating exhausted rhetoric, USA must bring itself into full compliance - just like Iran".

Trump is calling for the deal to allow "immediate inspections" by the USA; to "ensure that Iran never even comes close to possessing a nuclear weapon;" to ensure the deal lasts "forever;" and that not only nuclear testing but also long-range missile testing be "subject to severe sanctions" in the deal. "Those who, for whatever reason, choose not to work with us will be siding with the Iranian regime's nuclear ambitions, and against the people of Iran and the peaceful nations of the world".

The president charged that Iran has gotten "far too much in exchange for far too little", and threatened not to renew the waivers when the next approval period comes.

US presidents, under existing American law, must waive the sanctions every few months to prevent them from causing Iran to declare the nuclear pact violated and simply walk away to resume pursuit of an atomic arsenal.

Iran has complained that USA sanctions not connected to nuclear activity have effectively cancelled out any financial benefits it expected from the 2015 deal.
