Mets make low-risk move on Adrian Gonzalez

Mets make low-risk move on Adrian Gonzalez

The Mets are adding some insurance at first base.

The Mets and Adrian Gonzalez have agreed to a one-year deal, under which NY will pay just $545,000 of the first baseman's $22.36 million salary next season, according to multiple reports.

While the club already has an established first baseman in 22-year-old Dominic Smith, there's no question that they could use the veteran leadership and career.288 bat Gonzalez brings to the table. A bad back limited Gonzalez, 35, to just 71 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017, and he was unsurprisingly left off the team's postseason roster. When he returned from his injury, NL Rookie of the Year Cody Bellinger had taken over at first base.

Gonzalez will be a free agent after the upcoming season.

Atlanta remains on the hook for virtually all of Gonzalez's guaranteed $21.5 million salary in 2018, with the Mets needing to pay only the minimum salary of $545,000.

On Dec. 16, Gonzalez was traded by the Dodger to the Braves in a five-player deal that helped the Dodgers work toward getting under the 2018 luxury tax threshold. He has yet to prove reliable against Major League Baseball pitching, posting a.198 average with nine home runs and 26 RBI in 167 at-bats last season.

The Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez hits a solo home run off Reds relief pitcher Jumbo Diaz on August 22, 2016, in Cincinnati.

A bargain pickup like Gonzalez fits in with the Mets' stated plan of opening this season under the $154 million payroll with which they began 2017.

Gonzalez likely won't be the opening day starter in NY, as the Mets recently signed Lucas Duda to a three-year, $39 million deal.
