Number of flu cases 'state public health emergency'

According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention, "influenza activity" is increasing across the southern half of the U.S., with the deadliest, most unsafe cases attributed to the H3N2 strain.

CBS4)- The Centers for Disease Control says the flu is now widespread in every state except Hawaii.

Her death comes as flu deaths have risen by 77% in just one week in England, according to Government figures, prompting fears of the worst outbreak in 50 years.

Cases of students with flu-like symptoms were worse between Thanksgiving and Christmas break, a nursing supervisor with the Boise district said. But that only means the first half of the season has passed. Preliminary estimates suggested the vaccine barely worked there, and the US was again facing the same H3N2 virus with the same flu shot.

"Of the 89 lab-confirmed cases that we have received so far this year, 51 of those cases were influenza strain A and then 37 of those were influenza strain B and one case had both A and B", said PPH communications director Brittany Cadence.

"Speaking for all hospitals across the state, our emergency departments are primarily there to treat emergencies and with the volume of patients coming into our departments for flu-like symptoms that may not carry other conditions, creates real capacity issues", says Jeff Rains, CEO of Baptist Medical Center East.

Most flu shots cover four flu viruses - two influenza A viruses (H3N2 and H1N1) - and two B viruses.

In October, the Health Department launched a citywide awareness campaign, "I Got My Flu Shot. Not the Flu", reminding New Yorkers that the flu vaccine is the best protection.

Last week around 4,000 people were admitted to hospital with flu, up 51% on the previous seven days.

Alabama's governor, Kay Ivey, declared a state public health emergency yesterday because of rising flu levels in that state. Doctors are not required in Texas to report cases of influenza.

According to the NHS, flu symptoms may include a sudden fever, with a temperature of at least 38C, diarrhoea or stomach pain, and nausea and vomiting.

Vaccines developed for this year's strain are only 10 percent effective against the H3N2 virus, also commonly known as the Australian flu.

The rate of flu hospitalizations - the number of people hospitalized with flu per 100,000 - almost doubled last week compared with the previous week.

The increase could possibly be explained by fewer children getting flu vaccinations.

Henry Ford Health System has seen a higher-than-normal volume of flu cases, said media relations director Brenda Craig.

Doctors also say research suggests that even if the vaccine doesn't prevent someone from getting the flu, it could help lessen the symptoms. "People at greater risk for complications from the flu should seek medical care as soon as they begin to feel ill, whether or not they have been vaccinated". "There is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of the type of influenza that we're seeing", Harris said.

The CDC estimates there are tens of thousands of deaths each year from flu and pneumonia. They all recovered quickly.

If you're sick, stay home from school or work.
