Pirates trade RHP Cole to Astros

OFFICIAL: The #Astros have acquired Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cole was reportedly destined for pinstripes in December and then was reportedly heading to Houston earlier this week, which was denied by both parties. Cole, Ivan Nova, David Freese and Francisco Cervelli are under team control through 2019. It was also the first season in which he was able to pitch 200+ innings, a feat he has accomplished twice in his career.

Even with those lackluster stats last season, Cole is the kind of pitcher the Astros can afford to take a chance on.

In the American League, adjustments will have to be made. The reigning World Series champions have pitching depth that includes Verlander, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Charlie Morton, Brad Peacock, Collin McHugh and a slew of prospects.

Moran, 25, went 4-for-11 with a homer and three RBIs in seven games for the Astros in 2017. In 2015, he finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting. Moran hit 18 home runs and drove in 65 runs while sporting a.301 average.

Over 127 starts for the Pirates, including three in the postseason, Cole went 59-42 with a 3.50 ERA. This forced him onto the disabled list, and ultimately back into the minor leagues. If he is unable to find success in Pittsburgh as a starter, he has already established that he can be a dominant reliever (1.26 ERA in 35.2 innings), so the Pirates have a nice fallback option. Feliz has starting experience in the minors, but will likely compete for a spot in the Pirates' bullpen come Spring Training.

Moran was drafted with the sixth overall pick in 2013 by the Miami Marlins. In 2017, he slashed.287/.354/.494 with 58 extra base-hits.

In total, the Pirates are getting four players back-including RP Michael Feliz and OF Jason Martin.
