Power failure plunges CES into darkness

Power failure plunges CES into darkness

One of the biggest technology expositions of the year has experienced a very ironic power outage when the lights went out at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Others pointed at the irony of people being outraged at the loss of power in a convention center while people in Puerto Rico continued to live without electricity for four months and counting.

The world's most high-tech show was plunged into darkness for almost two hours Wednesday morning local time due to the unusual level of rainfall the day before. Thousands of attendees were ushered out and security guards temporarily refused entry to parts of the convention center. Nevada Energy is "in the process of testing and restoring power".

In a statement, CES organiser, the Consumer Technology Association, blamed the outage on recent heavy rainfall which caused condensation on the venue's roof to short circuit one of the facility's transformers.

Even after the power was restored, companies had to go through the hassle of resetting devices on display - those connected wirelessly with each other, in particular.

CES is the world's largest consumers electronics event. For an event that showcases the latest and greatest of technological advances, a power outage is all it takes to bring all of it down to earth.

Regardless of the difficulties that the annual convention seems to be facing this year, companies and tech giants continue to be thrilled with the overall theme, with smart lights and speakers soaring to popularity.

L O L! Intel, Sony and OREO even got in on the fun and made a decision to let some tweets fly in light of the situation.
