Turkish passenger plane skids off runway, teeters on cliff's edge

A passenger plane skidded off the runway in Turkey and stopped short of falling into the Black Sea soon after it landed at an airport in northern Turkey.

"Light rain was reported at the Trabzon airport late Saturday night into early Sunday morning", weather.com meteorologist Christopher Dolce said.

Some 162 passengers and crew were on board the aircraft when it overshot the runway and nosedived downhill.

Trabzon Gov. Yucel Yavuz said that investigators were trying to determine why the plane had left the runway.

The Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800 had 162 passengers and six crew members on-board, according to the Associated Press.

Passenger Fatma Gordu was quoted by Turkey's state news agency Anadolu as saying people on board panicked: "We tilted to the side".

Several Turkish Airlines flights in and out of the airport were canceled, as photographs from the scene showed the plane stuck in mud.

There are reports the incident couldn't been caused by a bird strike. "The front of the plane crashed and the back was in the air". The airport was closed temporarily.
