Wild swings occur in numbers of California mudslide missing

Pitney said many rescues were still happening Wednesday and Thursday, but most if not all were of people who were safe but just wanted to get out of the area.

Similar issues emerged in last year's wine country wildfires in Northern California, where at times thousands were reported missing, the overwhelming majority simply people whose communication with friends and family had been cut off by the fires.

"I work in LA, but I consider Montecito my home".

Emotional, DeGeneres expressed her love for her "small-town" community.

More than 1,200 rescuers are battling to find more survivors in Montecito, Santa Barbara, but there are fears time is running out.

Garret Speirs, a 54-year-old artist who has been living in Montecito for 20 years, was grateful his property had survived. "We are working with the local community to offer as much support to Kim and her family as quickly as possible", according to the GoFundMe page.

"My sister was such a good person, she only thought of others to the point that she would cry with you when you were hurt or sick", said Ramos' sister, Jennifer Ramos. The following missing persons were reported by family and friends, and resided in areas that were heavily damaged during the storm and subsequent mudslides.

Officials ordered residents in most of the southeastern corner of Montecito, which is east of Santa Barbara, to leave their homes for what was likely to be one or two weeks.

Lalo Barajas' partner of 17 years, Peter Fleurat, died in the mudlsides. To be told so soon to get out created a sort of evacuation fatigue, and many of those who lost everything stayed in their homes for that reason.

The storm hit hard between 3 and 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Turns out, there was a gas fire as well as the mudslides.

On the fourth day of the treacherous search for victims of mudslides in Southern California, emergency workers found the body of an 87-year-old man in his house, authorities said. On Tuesday morning, Mark, his daughter Caroline and son Duffy all were asleep in their home before mud crashed into the house, sweeping away Mark, a physician, and covering Caroline, a recent college grad.

Rescue teams from across the region raced in to help, and videos of dramatic rescues - including the extraction of a 14-year-old girl from a ruined home in Montecito - made the national news on all networks.

Roy Rohter, 84, founder of the Saint Augustine Academy in Ventura, was killed on Tuesday when a mudslide swept him from his Montecito home, according to officials at the private Catholic school. His wife, Theresa, was rescued and remains in stable condition.

"I came around the house and heard a deep rumbling, an ominous sound that I knew was the boulders moving as the mud was rising", he told the AP.

"That's all she could talk about last night", Weimer said.

Authorities would not specify how many people were in each category. She returned to her hometown of Los Angeles in 1979, where she began selling high-end real estate on the city's west side.

Bleckel was among those on the "missing" list that shrank from 43 on Thursday evening to seven just 24 hours later, although there was some confusion over the number because two of the missing had the same name.
