ICE officers preparing to arrest 1500 undocumented people in Northern California

US immigration officials are preparing for a major sweep in San Francisco and other northern California cities to arrest more than 1,500 illegal immigrants, . There's a report US immigration agents are preparing to conduct major sweeps against undocumented immigrants.

The planned raid, reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, was said to be a response to a new "sanctuary state" law that went into effect this year.

The source told the Chronicle that ICE agents may look to arrest more than 1,500 undocumented immigrants during the raids.

ICE has refused to comment on the operation because the agency does not release information on future operations. California became the first "sanctuary state" in the country January 1 when it implemented Senate Bill 54, a far-reaching measure aimed at preventing law enforcement officers from helping to carry out Trump's promised crackdown on illegal immigration.

Those who have criminal records and those who have been served final deportation papers will be the focus, but if they come across other undocumented immigrants during the raid they could be taken into custody too.

But he says the goal should be public safety, not deporting otherwise law-abiding immigrants who are in the country illegally.

The Oakland City Council on Tuesday voted to formally end all law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration officials.

Last week, ICE agents descended upon hundreds of 7-Eleven stores across the country to check on employees' immigration status. Oakland police had assisted ICE this summer, when agents said they were conducting a human trafficking investigation.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called ICE's plans "shameful" and "pure malice".

Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris sent a letter Wednesday to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan asking how raids are prioritized.

"Even if we presume that raids are an effective strategy to crack down on immigration violations, which I have no reason to believe is true, there is no non-political explanation for why federal authorities are focusing their efforts on the Bay Area", Alrabe said in an email. "We must stand up for their rights", the American politician, who is of Punjabi origin, added.
