Egypt appreciates Ethiopia's goodwill, insists on technical recommendations

On GERD, even though President Sisi stated his "extreme concern" over the lack of progress in the negotiations over the construction of Ethiopia's massive dam, Sisi explained that Egypt never had any problems with the developmental goals of the Nile Basin states, as long as they do not harm Egypt's interests.

"We don't want any once sided decisions on the dam filling process", the Egyptian president affirmed.

The Ethiopian PM said the Egyptian proposal "would be discussed on the level of the tripartite committee during their upcoming meeting". The Nile should serve as "a source of cohesion. and development, not of conflict" with Ethiopia, which is building a controversial dam that has raised Egyptian concerns over water supplies, he said.

Delegations from Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia met in Cairo in November to approve a study by a French firm commissioned to assess the dam's environmental and economic impact.

Sisi said that Desalegn's visit was "a clear sign for our peoples and the entire world of our political will and determination to overcome all obstacles" between the two countries.

"We stress the necessity of further studying the Egyptian proposal and carrying on cooperation in good faith and trust among our countries".

The leaders of the three countries signed the agreement in March 2015, which aimed to safeguard Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia water interests in the Nile River.

"We will never cause any harm to Egypt, we will do our best to guarantee a decent life to the sons of the Nile River, my country is ready to put end to all the problems between the two countries", Desalegn said.

Shoukry revealed that the current high-level meeting between Ethiopia and Egypt mainly envisaged to strengthen partnerships in the areas of education, culture, trade and investment.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Ethiopian counterpart Workneh Gebeyehu held talks in Cairo on Wednesday ahead of the talks between El-Sisi and Desalegn.

Desalegn arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for a two-day visit to discuss with El-Sisi bilateral cooperation and the Ethiopian dam.
