IL officials: Salmonella cluster linked to Jimmy John's

The salmonella cases were reported around the state during mid to late December.

People in IL reported becoming ill on December 20th and 26th, 2017. Their investigation led them to isolate sprouts served at many Jimmy John's locations across the state.

State health officials link five cases of salmonella poisoning in Wisconsin to sprouts used in Jimmy John's sandwich shops around the state.

Of these seven people, all seven (100%) reported eating raw sprouts on a sandwich from Jimmy John's in IL and Wisconsin.

Symptoms of salmonella infection can include headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, chills, fever, nausea and dehydration.

These symptoms can usually appear 6 to 72 hours after ingesting the bacteria, but can be longer. Anyone with symptoms of Salmonella infection after eating food at a Jimmy John's restaurant should contact a health care provider or the local health department. "If your symptoms persist or are severe, promptly contact your health care provider".

An investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was launched into a multistate outbreak after some cases were also reported in IL.

This is not the first time Jimmy John's came under fire for its spouts. The news release stated the company has directed all locations to temporarily stop serving sprouts.

The company said Friday afternoon an investigation over the previous 24 hours indicated the sprouts were purchased from two growers in Minnesota.

Jimmy John's president and CEO James North said in a statement that "food safety and the welfare of our customers are top priorities and not negotiable in our business".

Two cases involve IL residents.

Health officials say children, older adults, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems should never eat raw sprouts, including alfalfa, clover, radish or mung bean sprouts, because they're a known source of foodborne illness. "If you are sick, stay home", Housewright added.
