PS4 Firmware 5.50 Features Detailed

Sony launched the beta version of the PlayStation 4 system software update 5.50.

If you signed up to beta test the update, keep an eye on your email for details on accessing it.

The Quick Menu offers easy access to settings while you're playing, and the 5.50 update brings a couple of helpful-looking enhancements.

Play Time Management gives Family Managers (or other adult family members set as guardians) the ability to set limits on their kids play time and which games they're playing and/or watching.

You can also set restrictions on network features and PS4 applications for different, registered children. Notifications will pop up telling them to save and quit as time runs out, but "family managers/guardians also have the option to add extra game time via their smartphone or PC", as well as the option to log them out remotely.

A new option has been added for parents or users to specify how long you play. In addition, players can now choose to hide apps in the Purchased tab. The "This PS4" tab lists all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system, and the tab with your name/avatar lists all the apps that you purchased with your PSN ID. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe.

PlayStation 4 version 5.50 also comes with certain enhancements to the Quick Menu, including a pulldown menu under the Friends tab. This feature should come in handy for folks who often play with their friends online, but hate having to click out of their game and tediously navigate through a labyrinthian menu. The Quick Menu will also add shortcuts for listening to Spotify on PlayStation Music.

And finally, PlayStation Now background music should work in the same way as other games played locally from the console.

Users will be able to permanently remove old notifications from their PS4 - for better organisation and management. Any of the two will open a menu that lists the options to delete a single notification or multiple notifications.

Love customizing your PS4 Home Screen?

One of the most significant changes brought in with the v5.50 firmware update is the ability to change to custom wallpapers from an external storage system. A new option will apparently enable users to import their own images to PS4 from a USB stick. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look flawless on your dashboard. Supersampling mode will allow PlayStation 4 Pro owners to experience the benefits of higher resolution rendering on some games, even if they do not own a 4K TV.
