Maryland reports first child death from flu

The state doesn't say where deaths occur, but Lancaster County hospitals previously confirmed four flu-related deaths here, all among seniors.

"It's still not too late to get one", he said.

County officials said since September 2017, more than 9,000 Hays County residents have visited a health care provider with flu-like symptoms and nearly 2,500 of those cases had a positive flu test.

"This year's flu season is the worst our country has seen in almost 10 years, and our area has not been spared", said Lenowisco Health District Director Dr. Eleanor Sue Cantrell.

Officials say the number of people showing up at emergency departments due to the flu has decreased within the last week from six to five percent.

If you still haven't gotten vaccinated during this brutal flu season, you still have time to protect yourself.

The CDC said this year's flu season is the worst the nation has seen since the 2009 swine flu pandemic.

The flu has claimed 23 lives and hospitalized 244 people in Middlesex and London since September 1.

The CDC said all but two states and the D.C. reported "widespread" flu activities for the week ending on January 27, 2018. Reported cases of the flu or absent students in the district have not been higher than any other year. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, headaches, fatigue and coughing.

This influenza season seems worse than usual because some of those who have died from the virus are young, or middle-aged, and otherwise in good health.

Make sure that you wash your hands well with soap and water, which will help remove the germs on your hands. "This is the first time the flu has hit all 50 states", said the CDC. They also recommend washing hands, covering coughs and staying home when sick to stop the spread of illnesses.

Avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth. People with the flu may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after. It can reduce flu-related illnesses, visits to the doctor, missed work and school and flu-related hospitalizations.
