Auto Expo: Mahindra unveils wide range of e-vehicle concepts

The ongoing India Auto Expo 2018 is having its share of eco-friendly and hybrid cars that are attracting attention and are widely discussed about.

The Auto Expo, to be held at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, will be open for public from 9-14 February.

Electric cars are expected to be the next big thing in the global auto market.

Electric two-wheeler maker Twenty Two Motors today launched a smart electric scooter Flow, priced at Rs 74,740, and has plans to roll out over 2 lakh units in three years. The company also showcased its 2-seater electric vehicle - Uniti One - along side a virtual reality demonstration of the 5-seater auto.

Banking on big sales, Maruti has poured $180 million (roughly Rs. 1,100 crores) into a new plant to construct lithium-ion batteries in partnership with Japan's Denso and Toshiba.

Automobile major Hyundai Motor India launched the "2018 ELITE i20" priced from Rs 5.34 lakh to Rs 7.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the petrol variant. "Out of the hybrid and electric vehicles, the later is much ahead and now it is for the government to decide whether it wants to back both the technologies of mobility or stick to just one". The company's latest electric vehicle concept - the PCX Electric - which made its global debut at the Tokyo Motor Show 2017, will also be showcased at the Auto Expo. According to Hyundai, the All-New Kona Electric will feature two different powertrain versions offering customers one of the most powerful electric engines on the market with a class leading range of nearly 470 kilometres (internal target under WLTP regulations) and a great fun-to-drive character.

"The government can push it to some extent but in the end it will boil down to making the right product available to the consumers at the right cost", he told AFP.

High-end automobile manufacturer Toyota Kirloskar Motor unveiled the "B-High" segment vehicle "Yaris" which is seen as its most anticipated launch this year.

"I wouldn't say we have missed the bus", he said.
