No Winter Olympics for some Russian athletes as CAS throws out appeal

On February 8, a CAS panel concluded the hearing of appeals, which 45 Russian athletes and two coaches had filed against the IOC's decision not to invite them to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

"We saw tourists from Beijing and Shandong - areas where package tours were resumed albeit with restrictions - booking trips for the Winter Olympics", said Park Yong-hwan, a deputy director at Korea Tourism Organization.

Russia's Olympic suspension in December followed the uncovering of a widespread doping conspiracy culminating at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games, where host nation Russian Federation topped the medals table.

South Korea presented on Wednesday a request to the council's sanctions committee for an exemption to the travel ban imposed on Choe Hwi, chairman of North Korea's National Sports Guidance Committee. "We are now ready and look forward to the start and to successful Games", Lee said.

Earlier in the day, CAS rejected appeals by six other Russian athletes and seven support staff on procedural grounds, saying the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the cases. They were all banned previous year for doping at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but those verdicts were overturned last week by CAS, sports' highest court.

Those athletes cleared for the Games still have to compete in neutral uniforms under the Olympic flag as "Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation".

Samsung also said the International Olympic Committee was responsible for distributing gifts at the Olympics and it had no further comment.

They will wear a uniform with that name on it, and the Olympic anthem will be played at any medal ceremonies for Russian athletes.

The IOC expects 168 Russian athletes to compete under the neutral banner of "Olympic Athletes from Russia".

Though 169 Russians will compete here under the Olympic flag it appears there are some without bans, including Elena Nikitina, who finished third behind Britain's Lizzie Yarnold in Sochi four years ago, that are not so lucky.

Whether improved ties between the two countries lasts beyond the Games remains to be seen.

But he added "there are many such examples around the world, but no one is making a big show of it".
