White House Tells Government To Get Ready For A Shutdown

The deal follows a House vote yesterday that passed a separate spending bill.

"This bill represents a significant bipartisan step forward", said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), unveiling the deal.

"This is the most important debate we will have in the year over spending, and no amendments are allowed", Paul said.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has declined to make any commitment to holding an immigration vote. That means as many as 100 Democratic votes may be needed to get it through the House.

President Donald Trump said earlier this week he'd "love to see a shutdown" if Congress couldn't pass a deal by Thursday that included his demands for immigration restrictions.

"The Republican Party seems to be the party of big government in this day and age", said Brooks, though he added he doesn't think there's enough opposition to sink it.

NY said, "We are really making good progress". The shutdown began after a failure to pass legislation to fund government operations and agencies.

The budget will now head to President Trump's desk for his signature.

"So today, they are going to bring over from the Senate a proposal, they are going to lift the caps and they're going to say, let's vote on our budget". "We had a good conversation". Basically, their goal is to clear the decks for an election that will be fought cleanly on a strong economy, the war against MS-13, and not much more.¹ This deal gets them most of the way there. Pelosi said on the House floor on Wednesday. "But nobody wants to have it pointed out what an eye sore this deal is and how obnoxious it is to conservatives to spend good money after bad".

Paul voted for the deficit-financed tax bill in December.

"The compromise we have reached will ensure that for the first time in years, our armed forces will have more of the resources they need to keep America safe", McConnell said in the Senate on Wednesday.

Congress has relied on short term spending bills, or continuing resolutions, to fund the federal government this past fiscal year, but the deal would put an end to that through fiscal year 2019. While this shutdown only lasted for just under 72 hours, it highlighted the wide divide between both parties in Congress. The deal raises those caps, which were set by a 2011 law, by about $300 billion through fiscal 2019, which ends September 30, 2019.

The day before what would have been another shutdown, Republicans and Democrats struck a 2-year, almost $400 billion budget deal that upon passage will segue into Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) promised DACA debate.
