'I'm sorry': Mom gives birth, abandons baby in airport bathroom with note

Authorities are looking for a mother who they believe abandoned her newborn baby at Tucson International Airport with a handwritten note pleading, "I just want what is best for him and it is not me".

Tucson airport officials say that a woman who left a newborn in a restroom near the rental vehicle facility last month may have given birth in another airport restroom.

A rental vehicle employee discovered the baby boy in the bathroom with a note from his mother on his chest.

Airport police said it was likely that the woman had given birth in a restroom in Concourse B before taking the baby to a family restroom in the baggage claim area to clean up, the Arizona Daily Star reported. Police also found the woman's blood-stained clothing at the scene.

The baby was found by a staff member of the vehicle hire company around 9pm along with a scrawled, pleading note.

Authorities have now released the heartbreaking note the baby's mother left on top of him when she left the airport.

According to KPHO, a note left with the baby says the mother didn't know she was pregnant and is "unable and unfit" to care for the child. "Please get me to the authorities so they can find a good home". According to an airport spokeswoman, the baby appears to be healthy and is now in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety. While the newborn was not left in a designated "safe haven" location, police said she will not face charges since the baby was found unharmed.

Juana Quintana, a custodian, said she encountered the woman, who was holding the baby, in a restroom.

Ms Quintana asked the woman if she was OK, and the mother told her the baby, who was naked and had his eyes shut, was three months old before hurrying away.
